Shibari, rope and rope jams in Montreal

Rope bondage has its own scene in Montreal, its own studios and its own vocabulary. You will find shibari, kinbaku, and plenty of people who simply tie without putting a label on it. The city has several active groups and, most weeks, at least one gathering.

Jam or workshop

A rope jam is open practice time: you bring your rope, you tie or get tied, nobody teaches. A workshop has a topic and someone leading it. The two often share a venue, sometimes the same evening, workshop first and jam after.

What to bring

Rope, once you own some: jute or hemp for shibari, cotton to start with, which forgives more. Most jams lend to newcomers, and many workshops provide it for the session. Safety shears are often required as soon as you tie anyone, floor work included.

Floor work before suspension

Floor work takes months before lifting anyone off the ground comes up, and it is where most of it happens anyway. Suspension needs hardware, a rated anchor point and a reading of nerves that no single evening teaches. Serious studios say so upfront.
