Where to start

A munch, nearly always. It is public, there is nothing to prepare, and you leave when you want. Then a workshop on something that interests you, where you can often just watch. Parties come later, once two or three faces are familiar. Two or three events in three months is plenty.

Vocabulary before gear

Negotiating means agreeing in advance on the activities, the intensity, the areas of the body and the safeword. Aftercare is what happens afterwards, and gets planned beforehand. That vocabulary costs one workshop and prevents most bad nights; gear can wait months.

What you do not need

A defined role, an outfit, a practice, or someone to come with. Plenty of people arrive alone and leave alone for a long time. Nobody asks you to introduce yourself beyond a first name, and often not even that.
